Calabrian History
The history of Calabria is long and fascinating

From the earliest cave dwellers until today, Calabria has played a prominent role in European history. Because of her position
in the Mediterranean, sea faring travelers, from the time of the Trojan wars brought with them commerce, religion, philosophy
and scientific thought.  Calabria was already a melting pot of cultures when Rome was being founded with fine examples of
architecture, education,  philosophy and science.  Calabria was home to or participated in critical historical events like
Pythagoras and his school of Philosophy, the slave revolt lead by Spartacus, Hannibal fighting the Romans, Alaric, king of the
Goths and the sack of Rome, the Templar Knights in the crusades.. Not to mention great cities of antiquity like Reggio,
Crotone, Sybaris and Cosenza. Calabria has a way of creating excitement for the historian, simply by walking her streets and
from the confluence of events, rulers and culture that have shaped her and made her what she is today.

Carmine  A grandson's recollection that offers some insight regarding the price paid by so many Italian immigrants as

by Marty Sturino
After he had finished a few glasses of wine and the headlines in the paper, sometimes he would just sit and stare.   Puffing on the
cigar, rolling it around in his mouth.. saying nothing.. I remember like it was yesterday.. just sitting there along side with my chin
resting on my fists, watching him, then looking out in the direction of his stare. I never imagined then what he could have been
thinking.
