Calabrian Geography
Calabria is graced with a variety of natural resources and a wonderful climate
Calabria is a region in the South of Italy, situated in the “toe” of the Italian peninsula, directly across the straits of Messina from
Sicily. It is 350 km in length and has 760 km of unobstructed coastline. The land is formed by five mountain chains forested with
a spectrum of vegetation from scrub desert to hardwood forests, with the highest peak reaching a height of 2,000 meters above
sea level. There are two dominate types of climate, the mild Mediterranean climate on the coast and the continental climate
found in the mountains. Because of the short distances between mountain and sea one can quickly and easily move from one
climate to the other. Winter is cold in the mountains with occasional snow sufficient to support ski resorts while the summer is
generally warm and sultry, with cool evenings just perfect for late night meals and walks. The typical Mediterranean climate is
found along the coastal plains near the seas. Mild winters and springs give way to great summer heat that the Mediterranean
area is known for. Rains are limited to the winter and spring. Autumn is a truly beautiful season often lingering long into
December. Swimming in the seas begins with the arrival of the first tourist mid-May when the seas are still fresh, and will
continue into mid November. Famous for a natural abundance of year-round fruits and vegetables, it is as close to Eden as one
may be these days.

The Climate of Calabria A charming story highlighting the diversity that is Calabrian weather. by Grazia Bartolozzi
"...Heat, sun, and sea are synonyms for relaxing holiday. Approximately 750 kilometers of coastline are a lot for 15,080 square kilometers of surface. Lovers of the sea find it difficult when they must choose where to go. Throughout the Calabrian coast there are various types of alternating beach: white sand soft here, there a more rocky beach, but on the other hand those with beautiful surroundings."

Spring in Calabria A story about the blossoms of Spring and the religious festivals celebrated by Calabresi by Marcello Cua "...The almond tree, with its white blossoms dusted in soft pale rose announces the coming of Spring to the countryside around the many small villages of the Sila foot hills in Calabria.
