Calabria
The area has had human inhabitants for the past 6,000 years and was once colonized by the Greeks. Ruins and reminders of
days long past are always near either above ground in historical sites or still buried deep beneath the surface and along the
submerged coast line. A long succession of invaders and rulers from the east, north, and west have contributed to the culture
of the region.. influence of the Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Normans, and Spanish are everywhere.
This succession of invasions is the reason the hilltop towns were fortified and many groups settled inland to avoid the strife of
war and plunder.

Swimming in the sea starts in May and extends well into October. Calabrian beaches surround the peninsula and go on for
endless miles up and down the coast. The water is warm by ocean standards reaching 25 C by August as northern Italians fill
resorts along these beaches for their vacations. September after the tourists have gone is an incredible opportunity to have
an entire beach to yourself, while basking in a golden sun and tropical like waters.
Hill top towns along the coast afforded better protection from marauding pirates and invaders.. Gerace, Stilo, and Squillace
are but a few that offer glimpses of the past military and religious architecture.. Interior towns are less well travelled by
foreigners. They are relatively isolated due to the limited access afforded by the mountain roads. In this part of Italy a single
road winds up into the mountain from the sea often without a single cross road to link it with the nearest neighbor to either

Vestiges of ancient Greek towns can be found along the sea coast.. Towns like Locri Siderno, Rocella Ionica, and Crotone
provided harbors for the explorers 800 or so years before Christ. These and other ancient towns were built along the Ionian
shore as settlers colonized what was then considered the “new world” and were prized for the sheer beauty of the region and
strategic locations to expand sea trade.
