Italian Language Lessons
Welcome to our "Vacanze in Italia" Italian Language training lessons!

Clearly, learning a foreign language as an adult requires the use of several “complementary” learning
experiences leading to the comprehension of written and spoken Italian as well as the ability to
communicate in Italian.

Successful students will develop the ability to “think” in Italian.   What we call developing an “
Italian brain”.
To the extent possible, we will present new words and concepts directly to the “Italian brain” as if the
student were immersed in Italy surrounded by non-English speaking Italians.  Our material is presented in
a series of lessons, each consisting of:

Italian text - A storyline that flows from lesson to lesson based on a vocabulary relevant to
planning and traveling to Italy. The student is encouraged to learn the text well enough to be able to
tell it to others, and be comfortable with the pronunciation of the words from the audio files.

Learning Objectives -  English descriptions and explanations of the materials being presented
    with ever-increasing grammatical difficulty

Frequently Asked Questions -  Answers to questions that we can anticipate and that you ask
while clarifying important concepts and structures being presented in learning objectives

Vocabulary - A word bank designed to assist the student in comprehending words in the context of
the story line, and indexed to the lessons.  On the web, the vocabulary will only show Italian words.
In the printed material and dictionary, we will index the words by lesson.

Exercises – Studies and tests to assess and reinforce learning objectives
Dialogue – Short, practical applications of using the Italian for developing an Italian speaking voice

Procedurally, we recommend that the student:

1.        Read the Italian text out loud (re-reading several times is essential)
2.        Listen to the audio file while reading the text silently
3.        Review vocabulary lists to identify those words that are not understood
a.        Write out phrases from the text containing them
4.        Re-visit the text to try and understand the meanings based on the storyline.
5.        Re-read Italian text out loud repeatedly to improve comprehension
6.        Study the Learning Objectives section to learn new grammar
7.        Complete the Exercise section to develop and test your ability to “use” the concepts being
presented.  Use the printed version for Exercises.

Comprehension and communication come slowly but they do come over time. Rome was not built in a
day!  You will have accomplished your objective if you understand the majority of the text before moving to
the next lesson.
Stay engaged in the storyline, devote sufficient time to study and approach the materials with
determination.   You will succeed!
Great for working off-line!
